Police shot dead gunman on California beach as passers-by watched

WARNING: Videos can be disturbing to watch.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KTLA) – A gunman was shot and killed by police in front of passers-by in Huntington Beach, Southern Calif., Over the weekend, authorities said and was caught on camera.

The shooting took place at around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday after police received reports of a man with a gun in Huntington City Beach, police said in a press release.

Video of the incident shows a man, whom the Orange County Sheriff’s Department later identified as Ronnie Andrew Garcia, 43, holding what appears to be a gun under clothing as officers ask him to to let down.

The OCSD did not provide Garcia’s city of residence.

When Garcia did not comply, police fired a few shots, at least one of which hit him in the abdomen, causing him to fall to the ground, the video shows.

While Garcia was on the ground, he frantically reached for the garment that appeared to hide a weapon, and officers fired several more shots, appearing to hit Garcia multiple times, the video shows.

First aid was administered on the beach and Garcia was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A gun was found at the scene, Huntington Beach spokeswoman Jennifer Carey said.

Carey also expressed his gratitude that the US Open of Surfing, which is being held on the beach, has ended for the day.

“The crowd, the athletes had sort of dispersed,” said Carey. “It was a great thing about the timing. Also, due to the US Open, we had a lot of additional officers on site. As a result, our agents were able to answer the call much faster and much more efficiently. “

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-855-TIP-OCCS.
