Police helicopter crashes into California beach, kills cop
A Huntington Beach police officer was killed and another injured after a police A helicopter crashed on a beach on Saturday, terrifying onlookers enjoying a late-night tour.
As local outlet KTLA 5 reports in the video above, Nicholas Vella, 44, died of his injuries after the helicopter crashed around 6:30 p.m. in the waters of Newport Beach, approximately 40 miles south of downtown. Computer Police Chief Eric Parra of the Huntington Police Department confirmed Vella’s death at a Saturday night press conference and reported that his partner was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
He is now in stable condition, but it is unclear what initially caused the crash and who was piloting the helicopter.
“The City of Huntington Beach, the people of Huntington Beach, the Huntington Beach Police Department and the law enforcement community have lost an officer who was truly dedicated to his job and doing what he loved to do,” Parra said. “It is a difficult night for all of us and I would ask for your prayers and support as we support the families of our officers.”
At a procession held for Vella later that night in Santa Ana, the mayor of Huntington Beach spoke and shared his condolences. “This is truly a heartbreaking time for all of us here in Huntington Beach,” said Mayor Barbara Delgleize. “Our community values our police service, and the loss of an officer hits us all very hard. This tragic accident reminds us of the danger and risks our police officers put themselves in daily to protect our community.
